I have a mission to fulfill at Kotoko – Amos Frimpong

Enterprising defender Amos Frimpong might have many things in mind that he is hoping to achieve with Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the days ahead of him. However, his major priority for now is to help the Porcupine Warriors clinch the 2011/12 Glo Premier League title and secure CAF Champions League slot.

Below are details of an extensive interview he had with Kotoko Express last Sunday after Kotoko defeated Kpando Heart of Lions 2-0.

Kotoko Express (KE): Congratulations for the great impact you people are making in the league!

Amos Frimpong (AF): Thank you.

KE: You started the season with a 1-1 against Tema Youth but you have bounced back strongly to win the subsequent three games against Ashgold, Bechem United and Heart of Lions. What is the secret behind your current form!

AF: It’s all about hard work. We take our training seriously to maintain good shape as a team all the time. We play according to technical instructions. Besides we have players who are willing to die for the club. That keeps propelling us to shine in the league.

KE: Which match will you describe as your toughest game in the league so far?

AF: I will say our 3-2 triumph over Bechem United. The Bechem boys played a well determined game. They did not allow us any breathing space but in the end we proved superior.

KE: Some supporters think Kotoko underrated Bechem United?

AF: No we did not underrate them. We approached the game with all seriousness like we did to the Tema Youth and Ashgold game. Bechem United is a well organized side despite losing all their four matches so far.

KE: How did you see your encounter with Heart of Lions?

AF: It was also a tough duel. They played well and created some chances but they couldn’t utilize them. Fortunately for us we were able to make good use of the chances we had and scored two goals in the first half. It was another sweet victory for us but we have put it behind us. We are planning how to deal with Berekum Arsenal in our next game.

KE: How do you feel about the pressure coming from teams like Hearts of Oak, New Edubiase, Wa All Stars and others in the league?

AF: We are very cautious. Our policy is to take one match at a time. We don’t think about matches involving the other teams. Our target is to win every game.

KE: You joined Kotoko in the off season. Are you satisfied with your contribution to the team so far?

AF: I have not done badly but I believe there is still room for improvement.

KE: Since the Tema Youth game you have not featured in any of the subsequent matches. How do you feel about this?

AF: I am not under any pressure. Kotoko have registered many players and all of us cannot play at the same time. So I am not bothered. I am still training hard to hit good form in order to carve a niche for myself.

KE: Some critics believe the penalty you caused against Tema Youth may have dampened your spirit.

AF: It is not true. That penalty can never affect me because mistakes are bound to happen in football. I felt bad after causing the penalty though but I put it behind immediately after the game because I realized that no amount of thinking can reverse it. Besides Awal Mohammed and the other players also gave me words of encouragement which really helped me.

KE: Where does Amos Frimpong hail from?

AF: I hail from Ahenema Kokoben, a suburb of Kumasi. I was born to Mr. Joseph Frimpong and Mrs. Georgina Frimpong on 18 November 1991. I am the eldest among my five siblings.

KE: Which clubs did you play before joining Kotoko?

AF: I started my Colts football with a division two side, Ahenema FC in the early 2000. I later joined B.A United in the division one league in 2008. After BA United was relegated to division two three seasons ago, I joined B.A Stars and helped them qualify for the elite division last season. It was very unfortunate that we couldn’t last in the premiership.

KE: How did you feel when you joined Kotoko?

AF: Great. Kotoko is a big club and I feel happy to play for them. I have joined the club with a mission to fulfill. I want to help them win laurels and my immediate target is to help them win the ongoing league.

KE: May all your dreams come to pass?

AF: Thank you.
