Asante Kotoko assistant coach Prince Acheampong has played down
the severity of the fine and ban handed them by the Ghana League
Clubs Association.
Kotoko players and officials walked off the pitch after losing
7-6 on penalties to Berekum Chelsea in the President’s Cup match
played on 1 July to honour Ghana president John Mills.
They refused to return to the pitch to collect their medals from
Vice-president John Mahama.
The 21-time Ghanaian league champions believe the sanctions are
harsh after apologizing for their misbehavior.
Acheampong told MTNFootball.com, “We are aware of the ban but we
the technical team does not see any negative effect the club
will get within the time frame of the ban.
“We have a very comprehensive schedule which can even help us
prepare better for the season than partaking in those GHALCA
tournaments.”
He added that: “Some of the people are being pressurized to ban
Kotoko for no apparent reason.
“We have done the right thing by apologizing to the veep so
where is the problem again and we are not even ready to take
part in the tournaments because of our schedule.”
GHALCA banned Kotoko for one year and handed them a hefty 10,000
Ghana cedi fine (US$ 6,600).
