After
successfully dealing with Accra Hearts of Oak, players of Asante
Kotoko have sent a clear caution signal to the other teams who
are ‘unfortunate’ to be facing them in the remaining eight games
of the Glo Premier League to prepare for nothing but total
defeat.
“We have
finished with Hearts. We want to tell the remaining teams to
prepare well because we won’t spare any of them”.
These were
the summation of the words of some of the players who spoke with
Kotoko Express after forcing a o-2 defeat down the throats of
Hearts of Oak at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium.
Prior to
this game, officials and supporters of Hearts made a lot of
noise and predicted another victory over Kotoko, having beaten
them 1-0 in the first leg in Kumasi, but they eventually left
the stadium in total tears and annihilation as their egos had
been badly bruised.
Striker Ahmed Toure put Kotoko into the lead
in the 4th minute after receiving a through pass from
Alex Asamoah at the left side of the field in the Hearts goal
area.
While the numerous Kotoko supporters at the
stadium were still celebrating over the goal, Daniel Nii Adjei
fired a thunderbolt in the 19th minute to seal the
deal for the Porcupine Warriors.
Unlike the
first leg, Kotoko had better part of the exchanges this time
round. Despite the aggressive football employed by the Hearts
players, they maintained their composure and exhibited high
sense of discipline and determination on the afternoon.
Goalkeeper Isaac Amoako was at his usual
best in the post. In the 75th minute for instance, he
dived to his limit to deny Douglas Nkrumah from scoring a
consolation goal for Hearts.
The defence was also resolute. Though Kotoko
missed the service of Ohene Brenya who has been very consistent
at the back this season, Yaw Frimpong, Prince Anokye, Awal
Mohammed and John Kuffour co-operated well and halted Mahatma
Otoo and Uriah Asante from daring their territory.
Mike Akuffo, Frank Boateng, Nii Adjei and
Fatawu Mohammed also did a marvelous work in the midfield. They
did not give Hearts Samuel Enzemoba, Theophilus Apoh and Esme
Mends any room to operate at all. Ivorian striker Ahmed Toure
and Alex Asamoah also had an effective combination upfront.
Referee Solomon Mordey though did well at
the early stages of the game failed to stamp his authority on
the game especially after recess. He took some weird decisions
against Kotoko and also allowed cynical tackles on the Kotoko
players.
His decision to allow Hearts’ Owusu Sefa to
go scot free in the 34th minute without a verbal
caution after he deliberately punched Nii Adjei raised a lot of
arguments among football lovers who thronged the stadium.
Immediately
after he blew his whistle to mark the end of the game, Kotoko
supporters went into wild jubilation while their counterparts
were seen in a pensive mood.
In a chat with the Kotoko Express after the
game, right full back Yaw Frimpong who won the hearts of many
people with his pacy, skill and flair described their victory as
a sweet one.
“We are happy about this victory. Hearts
defeated us in Kumasi and we are glad to pay them back in
their own coins” he noted.
Asked how he sees Kotoko chances in the
remaining eight games against King Faisal, R.T.U, Berekum
Arsenal, Heart of Lions, Ashgold, Mighty Jets, Liberty and
Medeama FC, Yaw Frimpong admitted that victory won’t come on a
silver platter.
However he
was sure Kotoko has the power to sail through and grab a top
four position.
He
commended the Kotoko fans who thronged the stadium and asked for
similar attendances in the remaining games.
Midfielder Mike Akuffo also expressed much
happiness about the victory and promised another good show
against Deportivo in the MTN FA Cup tomorrow in Kumasi.
“It’s good we have won today. Nevertheless,
we will not take chances. We will prepare well and repeat the
dose on Deportivo on Wednesday,” he concluded.
