Asante Kotoko’s Executive Board Chairman,
Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong has pledged his unflinching support for
the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi
as he seeks re-election for another term in office in next month
GFA’s election.
According to the Kotoko Boss, the current
GFA President who was recently elected on to the Confederation
of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee has done so much
for the development of Ghana football and therefore deserves
another term to serve and put the country’s football on a sound
footing.
The Kotoko chairman declared his support for
the FA President on Wednesday when he spoke exclusively on
Kumasi-based radio station, Angel FM’s midmorning sports
programme.
“I am 100%t for him. I am going to campaign
for him. I even advise that if it is possible, the other people
should withdraw. They should not file for Kwesi to go
unopposed”.
“Kwesi has overwhelming support. He has
taken us to two World Cups. He has been elected to the CAF
Executive Committee” added the hardworking working Dr. K. K.
Sarpong who also announced his decision to vie for a seat on the
GFA’s Executive Committee.
“I will be going onto the Executive
Committee…I will go in my capacity as Kotoko’s representative. I
will seek election. And if I am on the committee, we will come
out with very good advice for the President to be able to lead
us well”.
Dr. Sarpong highlighted some of the fine
attributes of the indefatigable Kwesi Nyantakyi.
“The
young man has worked very hard. I am a new comer. But I am very
confident. I have my independent mind. I think we have to give
him another four years to see how he will lift Ghana football.
He has got ideas. I have had meetings with him and he is a good
listener”.
Moving away from the GFA’s issues to that of
his club, Dr. K. K. Sarpong praised the fabulous lads for
beating their bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak away last Sunday.
He argued that although every league match is worth three points
conquering Hearts of Oak does a lot of good service to the
confidence of both the players and supporters of the club.
He charged the teeming Kotoko fans not to
relent in supporting the club on all levels.
“The slogan is support to win, not win to
support! I want our supporters to come out massively to support
us in everything we are doing. The phone calls, text messages I
receive are very encouraging. I thank them but we have to revert
to the 1980s when the stadium got filled to capacity anytime
Kotoko played,” he said.
Dr. Sarpong disclosed that special fund
raising activities would be organised to strengthen the club’s
financial base, hinting that fund raising boxes would be placed
at gates to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium when Kotoko plays King
Faisal in a league match next month.
While praising the team for their steady
rise and high level of discipline, the Executive Board Chairman
revealed that three or four players would be recruited next
season to beef up the team. He emphasised the need for quality
players and financial support to get things done.
“We need everybody’s support. We have
sighted three or four players who we will add to our team… We
need financial support. We purchased players on credit. Winning
bonuses alone for the win over Hearts was about ¢35,000. We need
to motivate the players,” said Dr. Sarpong.
