After
scoring the only goal that gave Kotoko a point in their midweek
encounter against New Edubease, striker Alex Asamoah says he is
hoping to score more goals to help Kotoko finish well in the
remaining ten matches of the Glo Premier League.
“I was
delighted for scoring against Edubease. But I’m hoping to do
more in the remaining games and help Kotoko grab an appreciable
position at the end of the league”.
Alex
Asamoah has been very influential in the Kotoko set up since
joining the team about three seasons ago. He scored 16 goals to
annex the prestigious Goal King Award in the 2008/09 football
season.
After chalking this success, the former
Berekum Arsenal and Ashgold striker left Kotoko the following
season for South Korean side, Gyeongnam FC where he played for
five months. He returned to the country at the commencement of
the 2010/11 football season and had a brilliant start in the
first round of the Glo Premiership.
Unfortunately he sustained an injury during
the Kotoko-Hearts encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium in the 9th
week fixture and that sidelined him from action for almost one
month.
“Makwekwe”
as he is popularly known once again embarked on trials with some
North Africa Clubs after his recovery. He says he is staying
focused this time round for the rest of the matches to wait for
what the Almighty God will do for him.
“It is
still in my plans to play in Europe one day but for now I want
to stay home and help Kotoko carry out the task ahead” he noted.
Looking at the strikers Kotoko has
registered for the season, Alex Asamoah does not need to be told
that he has a herculean task ahead of him since he will be
having the likes of Nathaniel Asamoah, Ahmed Toure, Seidu
Traore, Prince Domfeh, Apreku Frimpong, Alhassan Bukari and
Iddrisu Nafiu to compete with for regular selection upfront.
Asked
whether the presence of these strikers put some form of fear in
him, he replied that there was no pressure on him since the
technical handlers have made it clear that nobody has automatic
position in the team. He believes with hard work, dedication and
discipline, he would maintain regular shirt in the team.
In his
response to whether he still has any Goal King ambition, taking
into consideration that Nathaniel Asamoah has stretched the lead
to nine goals, Alex Asamoah who has five goals to credit
observed that 10 matches in football is a long way to go and
that it was wrong for people to write him off.
However, he
considers his colleague as favorite.
“Nathaniel looks the
favorite for the award. But 10 matches in football is a long
journey and anything can happen”
Commenting
on the Edubiase-Kotoko game itself, Alex Asamoah said it was
unfortunate they ended up sharing points with their opponents
after taking the lead. He however urged Kotoko supporters not to
give up adding that there would be massive improvement in their
next game against Aduana Stars in the 21st week
fixture in Kumasi.
“We went into the game for the maximum
points. Alas we ended up dropping points. It is painful but
there is no need for our fans to lose hope. We will do
everything possible to make amends against Aduana in our next
match,” he stated with confidence.
