We
play to instructions – Yaw Frimpong

Enterprising right back, Yaw Frimpong, has
revealed that the secret behind Asante Kotoko’s improved
performance in the second phase of the Glo Premier League
currently on recess is not by magic but rather their commitment
and tactical discipline on the field.
In an interview, the left back explained
that anytime they take to the field to do battle, they do
exactly what the coaches ask them to do and says that was what
is moving the team forward match after match.
Kotoko Express: How does it feel like playing for Kotoko?
Great! I have played for some clubs both in
and outside the country but I can say without any hesitation
that Kotoko is outstanding especially when it comes to support.
The club has dedicated supporters who are always willing to help
no matter the situation. Apart from that, Dr. K.K Sarpong and
his management team also make playing for Asante Kotoko a
delight. They always make sure we are motivated to do the job.
Some
players say wearing the Kotoko jersey comes with a lot of
difficulties and pressure. Have you experienced anything like
that?
You know things have been going well since
we came so I have not experienced any pressure in the team.
Based on what I have seen so far, I will say wearing the Kotoko
jersey rather comes with pride and honour.
Kotoko really had a torrid time in the first round of the Glo
Premier League but it looks that things have changed all of a
sudden. What is the secret?
There is no secret apart from our commitment
to the club and tactical discipline. We train well all the time.
On the field, we also play according to technical instructions.
I think this is what is moving the team forward.
How will you describe your working
relationship with Coach Bodgan Korak?
Fantastic. The coach is very sociable and
open to every player. He takes his time to teach us at the
training grounds. After every competitive match he will try to
identify our mistakes and correct us. He is also strict and
hates lazy players. I just hope that the fans will offer him the
necessary support to stay long in the team because he has what
it takes to lead Kotoko to places.
Most of your colleagues that I have
spoken with say their ultimate target is to secure an
Africa slot. Do you think this dream can become a
reality?
Yes it can be. I believe we can make it
because its only four points that separates us from the second
team. Meanwhile we have 11 matches to play. Kotoko has the
temperament to make wonders in these remaining games. We only
have to avoid complacency.
What
about the referees? Are you impressed with their output so far?
It has not been bad. Some of the referees
have done well. Others too need to buck up because we are in a
crucial stage of the competition. This is where some of the
clubs will fight for glory and against relegation.
How
did you see the Kotoko-Danbort encounter and what are your
expectations in the MTN FA Cup?
It was a good start for us but we will not
take chances. We want to go far in the competition and defend
the trophy successfully.
What
is your personal target as a footballer?
For now, I have set for myself three
targets. I want to help Kotoko achieve laurels both in the local
and on the African scenes. It is also my dream to play for the
Black Stars one day and also play for a big club in
Europe.
Before we end this conversation, can you tell us something about
yourself?
I am a native of Sewia in the Ashanti
Region. I was born on December 4, 1986. I started Colts football
with Corners Babies in
Kumasi. After some years, I went for a
justifier at Feyenoord Academy
and I was lucky to be selected among players like Harrison Afful,
Mark Sekyere and others. I was later transferred to Asec Mimosas
of Ivory Coast. I helped them win the league in my two years
stay with them in 2009 and 2010.
Why is that most Feyenoord players always
go to Asec?
They have a working relationship with
Feyenoord so any time they need a player for a specific position
or role, they will just inform the technical handlers to provide
them some.
Thanks for your time and all the best.
It’s a pleasure speaking with you.
