The second round of the season seems to have brought some fresh
momentum into the porcupine family.
Though we are yet to put together a string of 5 straight wins,
the spirit in the camp and the hope and belief amongst the
supporters seems to be on the high.
I am not sure at this point in time if the break for the CHAN is
a good one for us or not. I see it on both sides as the momentum
could die away and then our next few matches will be a difficult
task to tackle.
However on the flip side as well, which I tend to tilt towards,
I also see it as an opportunity for Korak and his technical men
to get the boys to gel a bit more.
Three weeks and a bit is a lot of time for a team of talented
players to train together, bond and then manage to gel into a
unit that can conquer all they survey.
I have no doubt in my mind that the management of the team will
line up some friendly matches to give the team some playing time
together to enable them practice their training ground ideas as
well as gel into a unit.
I would like to caution here however that it is important that
we play 'soft' matches where we expect to score a lot of goals.
Doctor Vandidi has this theory, which I think works all the
times that as a team psychologically scores more they get more
believe in themselves and go out more confidently.
The last time this theory worked, Coach Bash was at the helm of
affairs at Kotoko and had time to play a lot of friendly games
and scoring a lot of goals in the process.
By the time the team was ready for the league, they had so much
confidence that they could play with impunity sometimes. This
current crop of new players has the ability to do so and must be
given that opportunity.
If we give them tough matches early on and things don't work out
well, there is the probability that they will lose their
confidence early and the work of the technical men will be
difficult.
I watched the game against Berekum Chelsea (I thought they were
Bechem Chelsea. Anyway the Brong Ahafo Chelsea team) and I must
be honest that with the tactics that the coach employed, there
was no way we were going to beat them even if we were given 200
minutes.
I also think that the tactics were probably right in the sense
that had we opened up as well, we may have conceded a lot more
goals but, once we conceded that cheap goal, we should then have
changed the tactics and opened up a bit more.
In my opinion, the league leaders are currently the best team in
the country and I was surprised they lost against Wa All stars
just before the league went on the break.
Korak again has an opportunity to prove to Kotoko and Ghanaians
that he has what it takes to deliver the goods for Kotoko. We
are currently sixth on the table and I will repeat myself by
saying that with the way the league table is going, a run of 5
straight wins, could get us into second position very easily.
The only time I will be willing to doff my hat to this team is
only after they have been able to pick 15 points at a go.
The teams above us are conceding goals as badly as we have. The
league leaders I think have conceded 15 while we have conceded
17 with a goal difference of 4 while they have a goal difference
of 8. They are not that far away from us and I strongly believe
that it is still possible to challenge for the title. If Korak
is able to get these boys to do that, then he would have earned
my total respect.
After the break, we will have about 11 games to play and the
next 5 will be New Edubiase, Aduana, Hearts of Oak and King
Faisal.
You will no doubt agree with me that this is a very tough test
at hand and to pick all 15 points based on our current
performance is a big task. But it is not impossible and trust me
that will completely change the momentum in the club.
I can guarantee you that the stadium will once again be filled
to capacity and we will be able to solve the problem my good
friend Dr. Kwabena Frimpong has written about.
At Kotoko, I think everything happens from the field of play. I
know some of you will refer to times when we were not
particularly winning but we still had the fans thronging the
stadium. Well at the time, there was a background and also, we
were not losing that badly.
We were most of the time amongst the top four teams in the
country so it was not that difficult. However to be 14th, 12th
and there about is unchartered grounds or maybe I should say
unfamiliar grounds since we have not
been there before.
To Dr. K.K Sarpong and his team, I would like to say that the
moment we are able to win those 5 games I have indicated above,
beating our fierce rivals and our city rivals on the way, we
will be able to carry that momentum all through to the end of
the season and definitely challenge for the title though it will
be difficult to win it.
As things stand, the Brong Ahafo Chelsea stand as favorites but
football being what it is, one can never tell.
Ghana
goes to the CHAN in the next couple of weeks and I wish the team
the best and hope that they will go one better than the previous
team did.
Fortunately or unfortunately, we only have 3 players out there
so it should give Korak the ability to have almost the full
complement of his team. Amongst the three is also goalkeeper
Amoako which means he is not losing much in terms of his
outfield players which is a good thing.
I will implore him to come out after the break all guns blazing
to ensure that we carry the momentum through to the top.
I remain your true red fabulous aficionado. Kotoko
Beku Me.
