Kotoko TV to hit
the airwaves soon
By: Jerome Otchere, Kumasi
The plan by the leadership of
Asante Kotoko to establish a Kotoko television is well on track
following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
between the management of the club and Next Generation
Broadcasting (NGB), operators of Smart TV.
A copy of the MOU sighted by
Kotoko Express over the weekend states in clear terms that: “NGB
Ghana intends to provide through its Smart TV service the
creation and production of a series of television programmes
titled ‘Kotoko TV’ to Kotoko”.
The MOU dated August 6, 2010 and
signed by the Country Manager of NGB, Yvonne Osei-Tutu and
Kotoko’s Commercial and Marketing Manager, Kofi Kapito does not
form a contract.
However, it is to “solely assist
in the negotiation and discussion currently taking place between
the two parties” it states.
As per the details of the MOU,
NGB Ghana would among other things pay Kotoko GH¢200,000
(exclusive of withholding taxes and other levies for the rights)
to produce and broadcast Kotoko TV for three years from the date
the agreement would be signed.
The GH¢200,000 according to the
MOU would be disbursed as follows: 2010 – GH¢60,000; 2011 –
GH¢70,000 and 2012 – GH¢70,000.
In addition, NGB Ghana shall
“purchase and assign to Kotoko a 30-seater bus and shall deduct
the cost of the bus from the total cost paid for the rights
besides producing, directing and broadcasting ‘Kotoko TV for
three years”.
Apart from soliciting corporate
sponsorship to support the production of ‘Kotoko TV’ and other
related activities, NGB shall as well finance sponsorship
syndication activities for the benefit of the two parties.
Added to that, “NGB Ghana shall
pay Kotoko 25 per cent commission on the total sponsorship money
raised. This would be within one week of receipt of the payment
from sponsors.
Finally, “NGB Ghana has the right
to explore other avenues they may notice” it said.
Per the MOU as sited, Kotoko has a
list of responsibilities to perform and follow. These include
branding its jerseys with Smart TV logo, providing production
crew of Smart TV unlimited access to the club (secretariat, club
house, training grounds, dressing room, team bus etc).
Kotoko would as well break
important news first to NGB Ghana, make available to NGB Ghana
its classical matches, grant NGB Ghana the permission to sell
Smart TV decoders during its homes matches in addition to
assisting NGB Ghana’s sales team to sell the decoders through
the Circles – the officially umbrella body of Kotoko supporters.
It is also expected of Kotoko to
assist in processing travel documents for foreign travels for
the NGB Ghana production crew of 3 persons aside aiding NGB
Ghana in their sponsorship syndication efforts. On ownership,
the MOU states that:
“Intellectual property, only where
originated or innovated by NGB Ghana shall vest solely in NGB.
All trademarks and insignia of Kotoko shall remain the
intellectual property of Kotoko and shall be used only with the
consent of Kotoko.
Lastly, all the trademarks and
insignia of NGB Ghana shall remain the intellectual property of
NGB Ghana and shall be used only with the consent of NGB Ghana.
