The 2009/10 Glo premier league has
hit its twentieth week fixture, but to Mr. Kwabena Yaro, it was
the start of a new beginning as he banged in his first
premiership goal in style.
Coming on as a substitute to
Baffour Gyan in the second half of Kotoko’s outstanding match
against New Edubease FC at the Baba Yara Stadium, Yaro attracted
a warm welcoming applause and shouts of his name from the stands
so much that he had no choice but to impress his fans.
Coming on at a time when Kotoko
was leading by a goal and was also wasting the numerous glorious
chances that came their way, Yaro changed the fortunes for his
side with his deft touches and crowned it with a spectacular
goal that got the whole stadium roaring out his name.
Having taken a cool shower after
the match and in a relaxed mood, he opened up to this paper on
his impressions of the match and his contribution.
“I feel happy that after we failed
to qualify to the next stage of the Orange/CAF Champions league,
we have been able to record a good win to appease our fans. It
has been a difficult period for us, but in all these, we will
need to be calm and take things in good faith”.
The league is in its twentieth
week, but Yaro has so far played in five matches and scored his
first goal of the season.
“Much as I have been around
training, the decision to use me in matches rests solely on the
coach and so cannot complain. However, I have taken new
perspective to my profession and hopes that I would be given
more playing time to roll out what I have up my sleeves”.
“I am happy with the fact that I
have finally scored a goal, but I am happier that with our
victory over New Edubease, we have moved four steps up the
ladder of the league table”.
“I hope that our upward movement
will give our supporters something nice to cheer about to wipe
away last Sunday’s gloom”.
Many concerns has been expressed
about the fact that Kotoko strikers have been goal-shy this
season and that their duty has been pushed on the midfielders.
“I agree with the assertion that
we the strikers have been goal-shy, but however begs to differ
that the act of goal scoring is the preserve of only strikers”.
“We are all witnesses to how Isaac
Amoako went to take the penalty against ASC Linguere to make the
score 2-0 for us. Any member of the team who gets fielded on a
match day has a responsibility to score”
“People have been pushing that
responsibility on we the strikers because we are closer to the
opponents’ goalpost than the rest”.
For once in many matches in the
league, two strikers, Alex Asamoah and Kwabena Yaro found the
net respectively.
“We are not swollen headed that we
the strikers are now scoring. What we hope to achieve is to be
able to score more goals that Ghanaian defenders will begin to
see Kotoko’s attack as their nightmare”.
“To the fans who have been
disappointed with our failure to advance in the champions’
league, I recommend patience and hope. They should have faith in
us and with their support, we would pull the biggest surprise in
the Ghanaian league this year,” he concluded. |
