Asante Kotoko Succumbs To Penalty Woes

29-02-2010

GNA - Kumasi Asante Kotoko crushed out of the Orange CAF Champions League after losing 2-4 on penalties to Senegalese debutants ASC Linguere on Sunday at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.

The Porcupine Warriors who entered the game with high expectations managed to score two goals from Kabiru Moro and goalkeeper Isaac Amoako to tie up the game to two but could not the killer goal when it mattered most and saw the game pushed to penalties, which the Senegalese proved their worth to cruise on to the next stage.

It was the second time in succession that the Porcupine Warriors have been edged out of the first hurdle of the premier continental club championship by a debutant team.

Kotoko who needed two goals to annul the 0-2 loss from the first leg a fortnight ago in Dakar, the home team started on a high note giving strong indication of their thirst to carry the day but over elaboration and erratic shooting was their bane when it mattered most.

Backed by an expectant large crowd that filled more than two-thirds of the stadium, chanting any time Kotoko had the ball, it would have only been appropriate if the team had turned their dominance into goals. Despite the dominance of the Porcupine Warriors, the Senegalese debutants almost caused a stir on 12 minutes when Moussa Dembele's effort following a swift counter that kissed the crossbar with Kotoko goalie Amoako completely beaten.

It was Kotoko all the way as the midfield duo of Haruna Ganiyu and Frank Boateng led several raids upfront but lateral midfielders Samad Oppong and Edward Afum failed to supply the lone striker Kabiru with the needed passes.

After several missed opportunities, Kotoko got the breakthrough on 33 minutes through Moro, who headed in from Oppong's cross from the right that the busy keeper failed to grab solidly.

Six minutes on, the ASC Linguere goalie Khadir Ndiaye scored full marks with a reflex save from Oppong's long drive.

Charged on by their fans, Kotoko resumed the second half strongly and two minutes into the half, they were gifted a penalty after Afum was fouled in the penalty area by Jamba Gueye.

Gueye was cautioned and given the marching off orders few minutes later for dissent for keeper Amoako to score from the spot to keep the two leg tie at 2-2.

Jordan Opoku and Kwadwo Poku were introduced for Ganiyu and Oppong and though their presence added more bite to the attack, the winning goal remained elusive as they strikers lacked ideas make the final decision of pushing the ball into the net.

With their numerical disadvantage, it was visitors goalie Ndiaye who stood between Kotoko and goal with superlative saves in the 71st, 73rd and a clean save of a last gasp free-kick from Daniel Nii Adjei on added on time just outside the box. During the penalty shoot- out, keeper Amoako had his effort saved, whilst Ofosu Appiah's kick flew past goal, before Francis Coffie and Gideon Baah scored for Kotoko but it was then too late.

Papa Jamba Ndiaye, Mbaye Thiam, Seriguie Samba and Ndiaye scored for the Senegalese debutants, as they cruised on to the last 32 of the premier continental club championship.

The exit of Kotoko leaves Ghana with no representative in this season's CAF Club competitions, as they were the only team that entered the competition. 28 Feb. 10

Better luck next time Kotoko that is football the truth of the matter is that it is not only Kotoko but Ghana football in general because goals are difficult to come by in the ongoing Glo Premier League which
is a concern and also i would
to say that to win on penalties is a lottery

on what standard does the management use to measure the performance of the coach and team. Kotoko bought the best players in the country, brought in the best coach for the season but can't win away matches or score more than 2 goals in match. I think paa kwesi is good but whatever he has doesn't work well for kotoko. How can a coach has a goalkeeper as his best penalty shooter. How many chances does he create in a match. How is the cohesion of play. what urgency does the team attaches to play. How is the discipline level in the team. These are some of the questions the management should ask themselves about the team and the coach.

Some of us fans in far away land are languishing for the recent performances. Is it for real this is Kotoko team I have followed for years? Management please rise up or before you know Kotoko has turned into pack of wolves barking at the shinning moon at night.

the whole team sucks if we dont do something about this the name kotoko will be forgetting in the next ten years

After watching the game against ASC Linguere, I have not stop asking my self series of questions, wanting to know the psyche and commitment level of the players? there was no collective play in the team, fatigue set in so early, there was no coach on the day, the man who was seen as a coach lacked ideas.

Also, I have being so disappointed in Bernard Nyankomago Yeboah about his assessment on "How the players fared". From which angle did Bernard watch the match? the little boy in the stands could tell how useless Frank Boateng made himself in the game, this is a player who should't have lasted more than 30 mins on the field, He always slowed the tempo of the game which made the attackers often found wanting, His tackles were mis-timed and his passes inaccurate, Our opponents knowing how weak he was often operated around him yet Bernard assessed him as having a good day. The current African Club of the Century (Fantabulous Kumasi Asante Kotoko) must not be taken for granted by this players, The technical team lack ideas and the current management members are NOT performing,Mighty King, your children and grand children are calling. LONG LIVE KUMASI ASANTE KOTOKO.

Y did u sack Bashir Hayford, Y did u sack Herbert Addo? We have supported Kotoko with all our hearts body soul and mind. What do u turn to give us? PAIN N SORROW. U sack a coach anytime u think he is not performing. Look at what Bashir is doing with Kesben not to mention what Herbert is doing in Aduana. Y is Kotoko going down like this? How can the top scorer of the league last season be on the bench whiles others are playing? We need to wake up. I am not sure if it was Hearts of Oak that needed only 3 goals to qualify they would have played like we did. Don't do this to us because u know we will always come and support the team. We have the best Players in the country so what is the problem? Look at where are now on the league table. God save kotoko from this mess.

I have said this many and several times and I would continue to say it again and again until something is done about it to help save our fabulous club from seeing real danger and disaster.

Not until the management of the time of Coach Bashiru Hayford renders a Godly apology to him and Johnson Smith (his assistant), nothing good would not be seen again in the fabulous team.

The whole team is cursed because of the way Coach Bashiru was pushed out from the club irrespective of what he did to train youthful players to win the league of his time and go to Africa as well.

His wife died and the whole team, management, players and well wishers sorrowed with him at a time when he was going through pain and sorrow only to come back to his post to be thrown out for no good reason with his assistant too who took over the team and continued the good work already laid down by him was also booted out for no reason as well.

There is nothing wrong with the coach and the players as well. Everyone of them is doing his best for the team but not until the curse placed on the team by nature is removed, Kotoko would continue to fall and sink and even die.

Believe me or not, the team would go to relegation sooner or later because of the curse.

I pity good players who were shinning stars in their previous teams who have joined Kotoko and are not functioning at all like before and are always been blamed by fans and supporters for not scoring goals or not doing their best for the team.

There is nothing they can do because the management has annoyed nature and that has resulted in a curse to the entire team which has also been transfered to the players to render them ineffective, unproductive and useless.

Otumfor, stand up and save your team and the entire Ashanti nation which is behind you and your team from sleepless nights and pains always. Kindly call Coach Bashiru Hayford and Johnson Smith to the Manhia Palace and with the help of the Ashanti gods and spirits do apologize to save all of us.

Not only that, bring them back to be the coaches for your team because they are the ones who can help the team to go places.

Paa Kwasi Fabin can also help the team but the curse is also transferred on him which is not helping him at all.
Nana, please do something.
Thank you.

SACK THIS USELESS COACH WHO HAS NOTHING GOOD TO OFFER KOTOKO. TO THE MANAGEMENT, HOW WOULD YOU FIRE COACH HEBERT ADDO WHO DID FAR BETTER THATN PAA KWESI AND KEEP PAA UP TO DATE? KOTOKO SHOULD BE RAN AS A PROFESSIONAL ENTITY NOT WHO YOU KNOW OR HOW CLOSE THE PERSON IS RELATED TO THE MGT.

You told us the first lose was engineered by the referee, what about this one that the referee was fair and in our own backyard? I was on the field to cheer my team. In fact, I don't agree at all with those who claim the coach should be sacked. Our boys do not have the team at heart, there was not any form of seriousness at all. How can you play as if there was nothing at stake? My boys, we have been going through a lot of humiliations by our opponents. When will you stop playing this DADABA kind of football? Anyway, ESCOBA, you were my boy on that day. Forget about the penalty you missed and stay focused, you will definately go places. GREETINGS TO IKE OF ASH FM. I DON'T KNOW WHY I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. IKE, if you can reach me, here is my email: braagyapong@yahoo.com.

All is just shame, shame and shame. Mo rekuyen aaaba.

kwadwo kusi-appiah,
plse do not sack Paa Kwasi now, otherwise it will affect our newly found form.

ASAMOAH FRANCIS- ATIMATIM KUMASI- GHANA
I think paa is a good coach but since things are not working as it should be it has confuse him and making him doing a lot of mistakes i think we need a white coach as a technical director and paa should still be there and work for the team next years.i hope things will be fine then

Kwesi Owusu(Chalipee)
Paa is equaly and even better than the white coaches and that if management have decided to go in for a white coach, then they should reconsider it.they should rather put in place good managerial principles to help the club running. FABU anaa, yeye Champion baako pe.

let us stop blaming the coach. who went to bring him? isnt it the useless management team? just because a coach wins a top 4 tournament, they went after him. that is lack of wision on their part. secondly, the players. what kind of players are they? they r as useless as management. the team needs complete overhauling. from top to down. no one must be retained. awudu nuhu always assures us that the players are fit, but when they get into a game they are suspect. the team needs to be ran professionally. period. Otumfuo must also take some of the blame. he shld have put proper structures in place byn now.
